Antique Point de Paris Forest Deer/Reindeer with Rabbit and Flowers Ecru Laced Doily

A beautiful antique from France.
This is a beautiful and lyrical round doily, hand-crocheted using the Point de Paris technique with bobbins. It features a forest scene with deer/reindeer and rabbits among trees and plants, with floral patterns woven throughout the entire rim.

The design is reminiscent of Art Nouveau, dating from the late 1800s to the 1920s.

The trees/plants sway in the wind, their branches/stems gracefully extending to create a path, or perhaps it depicts them rushing through an already formed path. It could also be interpreted as trees swaying in the wind after something has rushed through. The rabbits appear to be still in the meadow... evoking a natural landscape.

The plants and animals are rendered in relief with varying degrees of tightness and looseness in the weave, giving them a sense of rising and emerging.

The entire trim is densely woven with floral relief patterns, with intricate designs down to the very last detail.

The edge is delicately finished with a small picot lace embroidery.

The mesh base is a diagonal lattice, a net weave created by crossing threads in a star-like pattern. It is also robust and strong.

The color is an ivory with a hint of gypsum, with subtle undertones of khaki and ice gray. An nuanced ecru color.

It is very smooth and supple, cool to the touch, and has a crispness. It also has a slight rustle, suggesting the material is linen. Both the base and the outline threads have a subtle sheen and luster.

It evokes a sense of mystery, sacredness, and tranquility in winter, and coolness in summer.
