Antique Belgian Hand-Embroidered Lotus Bud and Leaf Bobbin Lace Doily with Swan and Water Basin

Beautiful Antique Belgian Lace Doily

Handmade bobbin lace embroidery
Delicate swans, water plants, and water flowers (in a vase).
In the center, a lyrical and poetic piece featuring
a single lotus bud and a lotus leaf motif floating on the lake,
rendered as raised appliqué embroidery.

Created in the Flanders region of Belgium using
dozens, even hundreds, of bobbins, this is Flemish lace
from around 1930, nearly a century old, adorning the rim.

Interlaced mesh/tulle.
Outlines are formed with slightly thicker, lustrous threads.
Elegant swans and floral motifs are
revealed through the translucent base.
The vase and flower motif resembles Seigaiha (waves or scales).

Feathers and petals are expressed with varying tension and looseness,
achieved through overcast stitching.
It's as if a swan quietly resting on the lake appears before your eyes.

The lotus flowers and leaves are connected by stems and roots.
A gentle, graceful, and tender atmosphere of swaying by the water's edge.

The edge features small, delicate picot lace.

The color is a clean ecru,
with nuanced off-white tones.

The texture is a blend of smoothness, softness,
and a gentle, dry feel.
The center fabric appears to be fine-count, high-quality cotton.

The bobbin thread is likely natural linen, or
perhaps a linen and cotton blend.

Both sides are so beautiful, it's hard to tell front from back.

It is in beautiful condition with no significant stains or damage,
however, there is a pinpoint discoloration the size of a burgundy needle tip next to a leaf,
and a brownish-tan discoloration between the vase and the water bird.

Please excuse these minor imperfections that do not interfere with use or display.

It also resembles Point de Gaze and Mechlin lace.
