Description
Handmade straw and wheat decorations The collection includes a straw bell, a small wheat wreath, a wheat sheaf pendant, and a woven conical ornament. The woven straw ornament has a hand written tag that reads, “Mexico, 1957” I am not sure of the origin of the others. These are in a Scandanavian style. The wheat bundle ornament is 6-1/4” tall. The tiny bell is 1-5/8” tall. Mexican folk art from this mid-century period was typically made by independent family artisans working within regional craft traditions. Regional Roots of Mexican Straw Art If this ornament was authentically crafted in Mexico as its vintage price tag indicates, it likely originated from one of two specific states renowned for this exact style of weaving: Michoacán Famous for its intricate artesanías de paja (straw crafts). Indigenous Purépecha artisans have used local wheat and rye straw for generations to weave detailed religious figures, angels, and hollow geometric ornaments. State of Mexico Known for palm leaf, wicker, and straw weaving (cestería), where multi-layered, geometric spiral patterns are traditionally woven for seasonal markets.
