NORTHERN CARDINAL Cardinals were formerly southern birds that have expanded their range north. Males and females occupy territories that they aggressively defend against intruders of the same sex. Some stay on territory year-round, others abandon their territories in Fall and Winter, especially during snow or ice storms. Their heavy bills easily crack seeds at your feeder. HOUSE FINCH Originally a western bird, house finches now range from coast to coast. Ashipment of these Hollywood Finches was illegally sent to New York City in 1940 to be sold as pets. When authorities were closing in on the illegial pet trade dealers, the birds were released, and they have rapidly expanded their range west across the country. BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE This friendly little bird is a common visitor at many bird feeders. When not frequenting feeders, Black-Capped Chickadees dart and dangle at all angles searching for insect eggs, larvae, and other food. By flitting through the woods in small flocks, their chances of finding food and detecting predators is greatly enhanced.
