This CD features two masterpieces by Brahms, offering a glimpse into the essence of classical music. The first half, the Violin Concerto, is a beautiful dialogue between the rich orchestra and the solo instrument, and is considered one of the Three Great Violin Concertos alongside works by Beethoven and Mendelssohn. The second half, Symphony No. 3, has an unusual structure where all movements end quietly, yet it is a masterpiece that condenses Brahms' characteristic passion, melancholy, and power.

The performances are supreme collaborations by 20th-century masters and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. In the Violin Concerto, the rare virtuoso Nathan Milstein delivers a noble tone full of elegance under the compassionate conducting of Jochum. His technique and deep musicality are truly worthy of being called the Prince of Violinists. The Symphony No. 3, on the other hand, is the definitive recording by Karl Böhm, an authority on Brahms performances. The unique soft string sound of the Vienna Philharmonic blends wonderfully with Böhm's strict yet warm leadership, conveying the beauty of traditional German music to the present day.
