Description
This is a vintage 1990 Pennsylvania Dutch folk art hex sign by Jacob Zook featuring a Bless This House distelfink bird design. originally created by the well-known folk artist Jacob Zook. Hex signs are a prominent form of Pennsylvania Dutch folk art originating in the southeastern regions of Pennsylvania. While they are traditionally painted on the gables of large barns, mountable signs like this one became highly popular starting in the 1940s as decorative tokens for homes and tourists. Every element in this specific design carries a traditional meaning or wish for the household: The Distelfink (The Bird): The stylized blue and yellow bird at the center is a Distelfink, which is the Pennsylvania German name for a goldfinch (literally thistle-finch). It is a legendary symbol of good luck, happiness, and good fortune. The Large Red Heart: Framing the Bless This House text, the large heart represents love, affection, and the warmth of hearth and home. The Top Heart and Flowers: The surrounding red flowers and the small yellow heart at the top reinforce themes of family happiness, faith, and emotional well-being. The Green Leaves/Vines: The flourishing greenery represents growth, plenty, and a fruitful life. Measurement in both sides shown in photos. In new condition. Smoke free home.
