Vintage Persian Hand-Painted Camel Bone Letter Opener

The Body: Traditional Persian miniature paintings are most commonly hand-painted directly onto highly polished camel bone or bovine bone. When smoothed and lacquered, bone has a lightweight, smooth feel that closely mimics early plastics like celluloid. The Borders: The geometric trim framing the handle piece features Khatamkari (Persian marquetry). This is a meticulous inlay technique where micro-thin strips of wood (such as orange, teak, or rosewood), bone are glued together in dense geometric  pattern clusters.  The Coating: The entire surface is sealed with a clear, glossy lacquer or varnish layer. This protective seal gives the object its glossy sheen, smooth hand-feel, and plastic-like finish.   The artwork on the blade illustrates a traditional Persian court lifestyle scene, often featuring royals, musicians, or polo players.
