Navajo Sand Painting...
Originally a sacred traditional art form drawn by medicine men (shamans) in rituals for healing and bestowing power. While originally meant to be erased immediately after the ceremony, modern techniques have been developed to fix the sand onto boards or pottery, and it is now highly valued worldwide as a precious traditional craft.
From around the 1950s, techniques were developed to slightly alter designs while preserving tradition, and to fix them onto boards for tourists, allowing them to be distributed as art. The motifs, deities (YEI), are supernatural beings appearing in Navajo mythology, depicted with a distinctive elongated silhouette. Not only dyed sand, but also natural pigments (colors) made from finely crushed natural rocks, minerals, sandstone, and charcoal are used.
