Happy Hill Rice Seed (Uruchimai) 150g / Approx. 7,500 Grains - Masanobu Fukuoka Natural Farm Web Purchase
Purchased from Fukuoka Masanobu Natural Farming's web shop in November 2025 for this year's sowing.
Since I have a little extra, I'm sharing 150g (slightly more than measured) from the 1kg that was stored in a cool, dark place. I apologize that I cannot confirm the germination rate as I just started soaking them today.
When I took out and weighed 100 grains, the average was about 2g, so 150g is calculated to be approximately 7,500 grains. (Please note that this is a calculated value and may have errors.)
When I purchased it, I was told, 1kg is roughly enough for one tan (about the size of half of a 50m swimming pool).
I would be happy if this could be useful for those who want to conduct trial cultivation or those who want to harvest their own seeds for next year. (*'-')
The following is quoted from Fukuoka Masanobu Natural Farming's web shop:
---
A legendary rice variety by Masanobu Fukuoka.
A new variety created by Masanobu Fukuoka by crossing rice from Myanmar with Japanese native rice. He named it Happy Hill, after himself.
This rice is characterized by its ears, which are fluffy like millet. It is a mysterious rice that can be grown in both dryland and paddy fields.
Cultivated naturally, without unnecessary human intervention, in its natural state.
---
Sowing period: Mid-April. (Late April to early May for direct sowing.)
Cultivation method:
Tall and strong culms, resistant to lodging. Strong drought tolerance, some varieties are similar to dryland rice. Resistant to weeds. Its characteristics are demonstrated in poor field conditions, making it suitable for natural farming without tillage, fertilizer, or pesticides. When cultivated with heavy fertilization, it can achieve super high yields of over 1 ton per 10a. (Each ear produces 300-400 grains, with an average of 200-250 grains maturing. (Keep the number of stems per square meter to 200-300). It is a late-maturing variety with many tillers and grows into large plants, so planting 1-2 seedlings with a row and plant spacing of about 40-45cm is optimal. Cultivation is also possible with 3-4 seedlings planted at 30cm intervals. (According to Masanobu Fukuoka's book The One-Straw Revolution: Collected Works - Journey of the Mud Ball -).
