Aralia Elata (Japanese Angelica Tree) - Hime Ukogi Seedling - 2 Seedlings No. 8

Thank you for viewing.

This listing is for 2 seedlings of Hime Ukogi from Yonezawa City, Yamagata Prefecture, as shown in Photo 2.

These seedlings were propagated by cuttings last year and have well-established roots.

Ukogi is a traditional vegetable known in Yonezawa City, Yamagata Prefecture, as an edible hedge.

[About Hime Ukogi]
It is said that in the Edo period, Lord Takayoshi Uesugi recommended planting ukogi as hedges, stating that the thorns provide security, and it can also be used as emergency food. This led to the planting of ukogi in this region.
The variety eaten in Yonezawa is called Hime Ukogi, and its young shoots (March-June) and young leaves (May-September) are used. It was originally brought to Japan for medicinal purposes, but due to its hardiness and ability to grow in barren land, it came to be planted in gardens and as hedges.

It has a refreshing, slightly bitter taste and can be prepared in various ways, making it a popular ingredient in local cuisine such as tempura, ohitashi (blanched greens), kiri-ae (dressed salad), and ukogi rice. Ukogi is rich in calcium, iron, and vitamin C, and also contains vitamin B2.
