This topper can be placed on top of your existing mattress to use it as a Tempur mattress. However, it is thick enough to be used on its own.
To prevent it from getting dirty, I used it with a Nishikawa wool bed pad placed on top of the topper, and then a sheet on top of that. (Reference photos included.)
