The rim's kakae-guchi (called uchikakari in tea ceremony) is slightly curved inward, designed to prevent spills. This makes it a convenient Japanese dish for serving dishes with sauces.

The shape is designed so that even if soup splashes from dishes like sukiyaki or shabu-shabu eaten from the bowl, it will flow inward, preventing stains on clothing. This makes it recommended for children and the elderly.

You can scoop up every last grain of dishes like ankake fried rice or soba meshi eaten with a spoon!
