Five-Color Holly (Ilex serrata) & Variegated Japanese Ardisia (Ardisia japonica)

When planted in your favorite Japanese-modern pot, mini five-color holly and mini variegated Japanese ardisia will add a vibrant touch.

The main flower meanings of Five-Color Holly (Goshiki Hiiragi) are caution and protection.

Origin of the flower meanings: Caution - Five-color holly has sharp thorns on its leaves. This flower meaning comes from its defensive posture, making it difficult for people to approach or touch it carelessly. Protection - In Japan, there is a long-standing custom of planting thorny holly in gardens as a charm against evil or to ward off bad luck, and decorating with it during Setsubun (the traditional bean-throwing festival). This role of protecting the home and family from evil is the origin of this meaning.

Characteristics of Five-Color Holly: Unlike regular holly, its new shoots have a reddish hue, which gradually changes into beautiful gradient leaves with cream and yellow variegation. Its vibrant appearance makes it very popular as a garden tree, hedge, or as a colorful foliage plant in pots.

The flower meanings of Variegated Japanese Ardisia (Fuiriyabu Kouji, also known as Fuiri Juuryou) are similar to regular Japanese Ardisia, including happiness for tomorrow, plump love, and abundant love.

Origin of flower meanings and characteristics: Happiness for tomorrow originates from its history as a popular New Year's good luck charm (Juuryou) that has been believed to attract money and good fortune since ancient times. Plump love and abundant love are derived from its appearance of bearing plump, cute red berries in winter. The charm of variegation: This is a variety with white patterns (variegation) on the edges of the leaves, popular as a colorful foliage plant that blends well with both Japanese and Western-style gardens. However, it tends to produce fewer berries compared to regular green-leaved varieties.

With such auspicious flower meanings, this plant is recommended as a gift for celebrations or as a ground cover to brighten shaded areas.
