Description
Our current handle variations include SUS304 stainless steel, carbon steel (red chisel imitation), SS400 steel, and brass.
Since there are no exact matches for width and thickness, we've simply ordered them by material hardness.
However, handle shape also affects performance, in addition to width and thickness.
We had initially given up on S45C, but upon further consideration, the fine engraving on red and blue chisels is done on a surface, which is essentially a square cross-section bar.
I believe the preconception that carbide chisels have flat steel handles also got in the way.

Among these four handle types, the red chisel imitation has an intermediate hardness.
Furthermore, the chisel itself comes in different sizes and lengths (No. 2 and No. 3) as handle materials.
Considering the characteristics of different chisel thicknesses and shapes, the red chisel imitation is the most standard and easiest to engrave with.
The new S45C will be our fifth type, and it will be made of the same carbon steel as the red chisel.

The S45C handle has a width and thickness of 4mm, a handle length of 73mm, and a 25mm carbide tip brazed on, making the total length approximately 93mm, falling between the SUS handle and the red chisel imitation No. 2.
While the material is inexpensive, the processing of the handle makes it more costly.
It is likely to be used as a handle material primarily for fine engraving due to its flat surface.
Regarding carbide chisels, we sometimes hear opinions that older chisels were better.
When I was a beginner and even as a professional, all chisel handles were made of steel.
The opinion that older chisels were better is likely due to the steel handle material and the different handle shapes from that era.

Image 3 shows a comparison with the red chisel imitation No. 2.
The red chisel imitation does not include the scale.
We have processed it to be closer to the traditional chisel shapes like the blue and red chisels.
In this way, we have reduced the step at the brazed joint and rounded the striking point.
Since the brazed joint and striking point are tapered, they are less likely to shift even when heat shrink tubing is applied.
Like steel, it will rust, although not as much as SS400.
Please understand that the finish is rough as it is primarily shaped with a grinder.
Also, please refer to our standard listings for SUS handles.
