What is the Ryugo (Tatsugo) pattern?
In the late Edo period, the Satsuma domain ordered Amami Oshima to present the finest Oshima Tsumugi. A pattern designer, gazing at his garden on a moonlit night, witnessed a golden habu snake shimmering with its back pattern in the moonlight as it moved onto a lush cycad leaf. The pattern originated from the mystical beauty of that fleeting moment. Later, this became popular, and villagers competed to create patterns of the habu's back and cycad leaves, further incorporating the abstract natural environment of Amami Oshima. It was named Ryugo pattern (Tatsugo) after the village where Oshima Tsumugi was dyed with mud. Even today, it is a precious item that only skilled artisans can create.
