When people die, they are judged by ten kings (judges) for their good and bad deeds in life.
The most famous of these ten kings is Enma-O (King Yama).
Although he has a terrifying appearance, he is also said to be an avatar of Jizo Bosatsu, and has a very deep connection with the compassionate Jizo Bosatsu.
Since ancient times, it has been believed that whether one can attain rebirth in the Pure Land or fall into hell is determined by the discussion between Enma-O and Jizo Bosatsu, along with the ten kings.
There is a saying, If you lie in front of Enma-sama, your tongue will be pulled out, but Enma-O possesses a special mirror called the Joharigami (Pure Glass Mirror) that reflects our actions in this world. All lies are seen through by this mirror.
