Modified Alesis Nano Compressor, sister unit to the 3630
This is a modified Alesis Nano Compressor. Its circuit is almost identical to the company's renowned 3630, making it equivalent except for the absence of a gate.
It's a 2-channel compressor in a 1/3U size. The internal circuitry is very simple, with the signal passing only through an input buffer, VCA, and output buffer, resulting in exceptionally high sound quality.
You can switch between Peak and RMS (average value) modes. Use Peak to firmly control the attack of drums, and RMS for a natural compression effect when applied to the overall mix.
The sound quality is wonderfully natural; even with about 20dB of reduction, the change in sound quality is so minimal that it's barely noticeable. Its 2-channel specification makes it suitable for use as a master compressor in recording and live performances. Its minimal tonal change and compact, lightweight design also make it convenient for live recordings.
Modifications include replacing the power supply diodes and capacitors, using metal film resistors for the signal path, and employing high-quality tantalum capacitors and the fast, high-fidelity National Semiconductor LME49740 operational amplifier for improved sound.
It is highly popular in the US as a legendary piece of gear, with modification kits even being sold. It has been recreated as the VST plugin NightShine, and numerous articles can be found online. One website even ranked it 20th in a list of the best compressors of all time, alongside legendary units like the Fairchild 670 and Urei 1176.
Included accessories are a generic power supply and a custom-made sidechain filter. The sidechain filter prevents the compressor from reacting to low frequencies, allowing for a more natural compression when used on a 2-mix.
I always list similar items, but each one is a different unit.
