*Enmon Byakko Suzaku Nishiki
The white animal surrounded by circular patterns in the Sasanian Persian style represents Byakko (White Tiger), one of the Four Symbols. The red bird represents Suzaku (Vermilion Bird), another of the Four Symbols.
In ancient China, it was believed that the White Tiger was the guardian deity of the west, and the Vermilion Bird was the guardian deity of the south. The original piece is a Kyo-nishiki (sutra brocade) from the Horyu-ji Temple collection, a work from the Asuka period, and the surrounding arabesque patterns are also said to be typical designs of that era.
