One of these masks, a Hyottoko, had a small tear on the back. The newspaper used inside was dated Meiji 51 (1898).
(See image / *Image of the back of the Hyottoko mask)

We did not tear open the back of this mask to investigate, but as it has been stored in the same way and has a similar condition and style, we believe it can be judged to have been made around the same period.

This is an old Otafuku (Okame) mask made using Meiji-era papier-mâché techniques.

With its very gentle smiling expression, it is perfect for folk art displays, traditional Japanese house interiors, and as a display piece in old Japanese homes.

● Size: Approx. 18cm (height) x 14cm (width)

● Material: Papier-mâché (Japanese paper, old newspaper)

【Condition】

There are scuffs, small scratches, and dirt due to age, but it is in good condition with no missing parts.
It retains the characteristic texture of Meiji-era papier-mâché.

Front: It has been stored very well and is in beautiful condition, almost unbelievable for a 127-year-old item.
(There are scuffs, cracks, small chips, and paint peeling due to age.)

Back: Torn and repaired.

It has a good atmosphere for an old mask, but please refrain from purchasing if you are looking for perfection.
This item is for those who can enjoy it as a vintage piece.

Please check the images.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
