Tsugaru Lacquerware Footed Trays, Set of 4 (Large and Small), Early Showa Period
This is a set of four Tsugaru-nuri lacquered footed trays, two large and two small, crafted in Hirosaki, Tsugaru, during the early Showa period.
Originally, there were several of each size.
They can still be used for special meals such as Osechi-ryori (New Year's traditional cuisine) or Kaiseki-ryori (traditional multi-course Japanese dinner).
All of the mother-of-pearl inlay work, where the lacquer is built up in layers over natural wood grain, polished to reveal a mottled pattern, and mother-of-pearl is embedded, is done by hand.
There are signs of age-related dirt.
These are wonderful utensils, but I recognized their beauty in use and used them about once a year, resulting in minor scratches. Four pieces in good condition remain.
Please check the photos for the condition.
