■ It is made by hardening a hand-woven bamboo basket of carefully selected madake bamboo with lacquer over ten times, and then skillfully polishing it with charcoal powder and antler powder, resulting in a durable and elegant finish that ordinary lacquerware cannot match.
■ It is convenient and useful lacquerware that does not expand or contract with changes in temperature and humidity, and does not require special care like wiping after use.
[What is Rantai?]
■ It means to have a bamboo basket as its base (foundation).
■ As the name suggests, it is finished by applying lacquer to a vessel woven from bamboo and then decorating and processing it through repeated polishing.
■ Rantai is lacquerware made by weaving bamboo strips from the pith-removed, knotless part of bamboo along a wooden mold to create the base. It is lightweight and less affected by dryness or humidity, making it safe to use in any environment.
[History]
★ In the Meiwa era, lacquerware with a hard base was created by artisans employed by the Kurume domain. In 1885, priest Jiro Kawasaki applied this technique to bamboo baskets and, through diligent research and effort, completed a refined and elegant utensil. This marked the beginning of Aitaishikki, which was introduced to the world as Kurume Kagoji Nuri (Kurume Basket Base Lacquerware).
