Antique Italian Cantù & Bobbin Lace Tulle Flower 13cm Doily

A beautiful antique from 19th century Italy,
this needle lace piece measures approximately 13cm in diameter.

Cantù lace technique...
This method involves rolling and layering
plain cotton (and linen) tape to create motifs.

The gaps are then filled with needle-worked
tulle lace netting, resulting in a small,
beautiful doily or coaster.

Alternatively, it may be a Belgian
Blankenberge point technique.

Features a large flower in the center.
The four floral motifs on the trim
resemble dandelions or ribbons, adding a charming touch.

The gentle, soft cream color is elegant.
It enhances the charm of any object or figurine placed upon it.

In this lace technique,
fine (bobbin lace) tape is manipulated with needles and hands,
rolling and layering to create curves and flowing lines,
forming beautiful, symbolic natural motifs like petals and wings.

A principle of this technique is no cuts or endings.
While the tape is interrupted in the center and trim,
many points of the pattern connect.

It embodies infinity...
a desire for the beauty and permanence of tangible forms.

Though it may appear as scattered threads at first glance,
the composition is meticulously balanced,
aiming for symmetry.
It is carefully crafted with regularity and balance,
expressing wishes for peace, stability, and tranquility.

Elaborate needlework adorns and gracefully enhances the piece.

Cantù lace originated in the hilly, lake-filled region north of Milan,
a painstaking technique that involves curving fine linen threads
to form motifs.

A gentle, soft ecru,
an ivory color with a hint of pale yellow.
It seems to have acquired its hue over time.

It has a subtle sheen and a firm yet
smooth, soft texture, made from high-quality
linen yarn, or possibly a blend of linen and cotton.

There are slight hints of pale yellow in some areas,
but there is no damage such as stains, tears, or rips.

Considering its age, it is in very good condition.
We hope it will be cherished for many years to come.

Place it on a table, chest, or cabinet.
It would also be beautiful framed on a wall,
or used to display jewelry, small figurines,
or other objects.

*It is beautiful from both sides and difficult to distinguish,
so we have posted images alternating between front and back. 72↓
