Sori Yanagi Mingei Dove Whistle by Old Shop Takakame, Wooden Bird-Shaped Folk Toy from Naruko, Miyagi Prefecture, with Box

This design was created by Sori Yanagi, who commissioned it from Takagame, a long-established Kokeshi doll maker in Naruko, Miyagi Prefecture. It was born out of the friendship between Yanagi and the then-owner, Takeo Takahashi.

It is made using a potter's wheel, skillfully utilizing the rotating body. The pigeon whistle is made by turning the head and body separately on the wheel and then joining them together. A hollow is created in the body and then carved, completing the wooden part. After that, the artist paints the pigeon whistle according to the sketch drawn by Yanagi.

The gentle roundness that fits comfortably in the hands of children and adults alike is likely the result of repeated prototyping.
