Nintendo Game Boy ALLEYWAY Game With Case, Tested, Works This is the Cartridge and case ONLY Alleyway is a block-breaking puzzle video game developed by Intelligent Systems and Nintendo R&D1, and published by Nintendo. Released as a launch title for the Game Boy, it debuted in Japan on April 21, 1989, alongside the handheld console itself. It arrived in North America in August 1989 and in Europe on September 28, 1990. The game is a portable adaptation of the classic arcade game Breakout. The objective is to control a paddle (depicted as a spaceship) at the bottom of the screen to bounce a ball upward, destroying a formation of bricks without letting the ball fall into the pit below. Stage Variety: The game features 32 stages with three distinct screen types: Normal (static), Scrolling (blocks move horizontally), and Advancing (blocks move downward toward the player). Mechanics: Unlike contemporaries such as Arkanoid, Alleyway notably lacks power-ups. The primary difficulty modifier is a mechanic where hitting the top of the screen shrinks the paddle size by half for the remainder of the level. Bonus Stages: Every third stage is a bonus round where the bricks form pixel-art silhouettes of characters from the Super Mario franchise, such as Mario, Koopa Troopa, and Piranha Plants.
