Emilie Tomanova
Born in Prague in 1933. Studied under Professor Balas at the National Academy of Graphic Arts in Prague, then graduated from Professor Pukr's studio at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague.
In 1965, she joined the Hollar Society, an association of printmakers, and exhibited frequently at their exhibitions.
As one of Czechoslovakia's leading artists, she exhibited in Belgium, Yugoslavia, Canada, the UK, France, and other countries, and held her first solo exhibition in Prague in 1967.
Participated in the Paris Biennale of Young Artists in 1963, and in the same year, in Ljubljana.
Exhibited at the Krakow Printmaking Biennale in 1968.
In 1968, she was in Vichy, France, where she won the Grand Prix in the printmaking division.
Her works are now in numerous collections and in the hands of enthusiasts both within and outside of Czechoslovakia.
With the elegance of her works and the rare skill of expression among contemporary Czech artists, this modest female artist has increasingly made her mark in the Czech printmaking world in recent years.
Since around 1960, abstraction has been a trend in Czech printmaking, but in contrast to this general trend, Emilie Tomanova primarily uses motifs from ancient imagery in her compositions.
Tomanova's works, characterized by monochrome or multicolor etchings and drypoints, can be summarized as having emotional depth.
Her works, depending on how you look at them, contain something that makes one think about a woman's love for her child and human happiness, especially for mothers.
The overflowing warmth is like the poetic world of fairy tales, and her outstanding technique and refined taste perfectly express it.
She has said that she often drew inspiration from the figures of her own young children in the past, but she now prefers themes such as the underwater world and plants, and states that she is inspired by ancient nautical charts and Byzantine art.
She represents one of the main trends in contemporary Czech printmaking and is a top-tier artist who has received the highest international acclaim.
