Shunsen Natori
Born in Kushigata Town, Nakakoma District, Yamanashi Prefecture (present-day Minami-Alps City). Real name Yoshinosuke. Moved to Tokyo in his youth and studied Japanese painting under Kosen Kubota, Hyakusui Hirafuku, and others. In 1906 (Meiji 39), his work [Sea Dragon God] was selected for the Nitten exhibition, and he was later recommended as an associate member. At the same time, he joined the Asahi Shimbun newspaper company and illustrated many serialized novels, including Soseki Natsume's Sanshiro, as well as works by Toson Shimazaki, Sohei Morita, and Kyoka Izumi.
After that, he published many woodblock prints as an actor portrait artist, such as [Shunsen's Collection of Portraits] and [New Edition of Stage Portraits]. He established a new era in Showa-era actor prints. Shunsen had aspects as a Japanese painter who deeply admired Hyakusui Hirafuku, and as an illustrator of newspaper novels for the Asahi Shimbun and others, but it was his actor print woodblock prints, seen in works like [Shunsen's Collection of Portraits of Creative Woodblock Prints], that particularly raised his profile.
