This is a Duanxi inkstone that has been tuned (re-engraved and serviced) in the Minisuta style.

This is an old Duanxi inkstone, but it is made of good quality stone.
The definition of old Duanxi varies, so while I don't label it as old Duanxi, old Shexian inkstone, or old Chengni inkstone, it is equivalent to such.
It's a misconception that older is better. What's important is to finish old inkstones to a modern standard. Old inkstones may be easier to grind, but the ink color will be poor.
This is an undeniable, fundamental principle.
Properly finishing an inkstone, whether old or new, is the most crucial aspect.
However, I have never seen anyone who knows how to do this properly.

While the method of preparation varies for each type of Duanxi stone, this inkstone is fundamentally tuned for both kana and kanji calligraphy. It is crafted to maximize ink spread and speed of darkening without compromising the ink's color and elegant lines achievable with Japanese ink.
