Antique Essanay Copper Soda Acid Fire Extinguisher Pyrene c1930-1935 2.5 Gal
Essanay
An authentic Essanay Soda & Acid Fire Extinguisher, manufactured by the Pyrene Manufacturing Company of Newark, New Jersey, dating to approximately 1930–1935. Constructed from heavy-gauge copper with solid brass fittings and embossed lettering, this early 20th-century extinguisher represents one of the most iconic forms of American industrial design. Featuring its original hose, brass nozzle, cast carrying ring, and deeply embossed front panel, this example has developed a rich untouched patina with natural verdigris that collectors and interior designers seek. The original Underwriters’ Laboratories inspection marking, “Tested to 350 LBS,” and Pyrene manufacturer’s information remain visible, enhancing both authenticity and historical appeal. Originally designed as a 2½-gallon soda-acid hand fire extinguisher, this model operated by inverting the cylinder to mix sulfuric acid with a baking soda solution, creating carbon dioxide pressure to discharge water. These extinguishers were widely used in factories, warehouses, hotels, railroad facilities, and commercial buildings before being replaced by modern pressurized extinguishers after World War II. * Brand: Essanay * Manufacturer: Pyrene Manufacturing Company * Type: Soda & Acid Fire Extinguisher * Capacity: 2½ Gallons * Era: Circa 1930–1935 * Country of Manufacture: United States * Manufacturer Location: Newark, New Jersey * Material: Solid Copper & Brass * Finish: Original Aged Patina * Color: Copper / Bras
