Description
CONDITION: Condition Rating: Fair Condition Description: Fair antique condition with severe dry rotting to the half-calf leather spines and heavily rubbed marbled boards. The hinges are tender with edge wear, and there is age-appropriate foxing throughout the text block. DESCRIPTION: Features an authentic 1858 early American printing of Motley's defining historical treatise on the Netherlands. Bound in a custom 19th-century half-calf leather over marbled boards with raised spine bands and gilt lettering. Provenance: Contains 19th-century manuscript inscriptions to Leonard Jewell (1858) and Rev. Charles Wadsworth (1878). Rev. Charles Wadsworth (1814–1882) was a highly prominent Presbyterian minister in Philadelphia, famously known as a close friend and muse to poet Emily Dickinson. While this adds a fascinating layer of literary and local history, it does not exponentially impact the monetary value of this set compared to the standard antiquarian market rates for non-authorial presentation copies, keeping the valuation grounded at standard market levels. Maker/Brand: Harper & Brothers Item Type: Antiquarian Book Set Material: Calf Leather, Marbled Paper Era/Age: 1850s Style/Aesthetic: Victorian / Academic Color(s): Brown, Tan Measurements: Approx. 9.5 H x 6 W x 5.5 D (stacked) Special Characteristics: 3 Volume Complete Set, Custom Binding Please review all photos carefully as they are part of the description.
