Hanging scroll "Sea" with ink calligraphy and floral decoration
39.60 $
Description
This hanging scroll is a calligraphy work featuring the powerfully written kanji character **浄 (Jō)** (or the old form 淨).
Details:
• Written character: 浄.
• Meaning: Pure, spotless, free from worldly desires. In Buddhism (especially Zen Buddhism like the Sōtō school), purifying the mind and space is highly valued, making single-character calligraphy like this common.
• Artist (Gō): The signature seal (red stamp) appears to read **可山 (Kazan)**.
• Kazan is a pseudonym often used by Zen monks. Judging by the vigor and strength of the brushstrokes, it is presumed to have been written by a highly trained senior monk or a monk skilled in calligraphy.
Meaning and Purpose of Display:
This single character 浄 embodies the wish to maintain the space (room) as a pure environment and to bring peace to the viewer's mind.
It is also deeply related to the One Buddha, Two Patriarchs hanging scroll (Sōtō school) that was initially inquired about, and is likely cherished as a type of Zen phrase (Zengo) for regulating one's mind in daily life.
Includes a paulownia wood box.
- Design: Ink calligraphy hanging scroll
