This sword features a unique hamon (temper line).
It is a double-layered hamon with a straight temper line interspersed with irregular waves, said to have been originated by Izuminokami Kanesada.
The yabitsu (arrowhead) pattern in the irregular waves is said to be modeled after the arrowhead of a bow and arrow used in warfare.
Swords by Kanesada are known for their sharpness and are designated as artistic works.
It is famous that Toshizo Hijikata, the vice-commander of the Shinsengumi, favored carrying this type of sword.

The knot of the sageo (sword cord) can be changed.
